In 1947, recognizing the symbolic importance of the historic 1770 Mennonite Meetinghouse for all Mennonites, the General Conference of the Mennonite Church authorized its Historical Committee to work out a plan whereby the (historic) Germantown Mennonite Church would be preserved.  The Germantown Mennonite Corporation (now Germantown Mennonite Historic Trust) was formed as a 501(c)3 organization separate from the Germantown Mennonite Congregation, and charged with the care of the historic site.  Today, the GMHT Board is comprised of individuals representing various Mennonite constituencies as well as at-large members.
